Gyarmathy, Tihamér (1915 - 2005)
Biography:
1915 he was born on 8th March, in Pécs (deceased in 2005)
1920s at the end of the decade, his arts teacher, Jenő Gábor, introduces him to the Bauhaus group in Pécs: Marcell Breuer, Alfréd Forbáth, Farkas Molnár and Andor Weininger.
From 1933 he is a student at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts. His masters are: János Vaszary and László Kandó
1937-39 he studies in Italy, in France, in Switzerland, and in Germany. He meets István Beöthy, André Breton, Piet Mondrin, Hans Arp and Max Bill.
1939 he meets Ernő Kállai, who introduces him to Lajos Kassák.
1945 he is a member of the “European School”
1946 he leaves the “European School” and takes part in the establishment of the artist group “Gallery to the 4 Points of the Compass”, which unites non-figurative artists.
1947 he partakes in the 3rd Surrealist World Fair (“Salon des Réalités Nouvelles”), in Paris.
1948-1962 he does not show up in public, except for the Spring Exhibition in 1957.
1963 he is invited to the 1st International “Plein Air” Symposium, in Kosalin, Poland.
1965 he exhibits a 9 x 4.5 metres big iron sculpture for the 1st Sculpture Biennale in Elblag, Poland.
From 1971 he travels a lot in Western-Europe.
1973 he goes on a 2 months tour in Africa.
1991 he is a founding member of Hungarian Academy of Arts.
1993 he is a member of Széchenyi Academy of Literature and Arts.
