Reich, Károly (1922-1988)

Biography:

1942-1944: he studies at the Hungarian College of Applied Arts and the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, his masters: Jenő Haranghy, György Konecsni, Gyula Hincz. Works as a poster designer, then illustrator
1954, 1956: Munkácsy Award
1963: Kossuth Award
1972: Artist of Merit
1975: “Kiváló Művész”
He made his drawings with unique technical knowledge. His main inspiration was the Greek mythology’s serenity and classical calmness. Tension and drama is not far from him, either (Radnóti illustrations). The harmony of style and atmosphere; words and picture; and clear lines of drawing are typical of his applied graphic works. He illustrated nearly 500 books, among others the classical masterpieces of literature from the Song of Solomon through Ovidus to Shakespeare. In the 1980s he also made bronze statuettes. Since 1990 a memory room has preserved his memory in Budapest. Unfortunately, his memory house in Balatonszemes (1991-2007) is not open any longer.
